The Special Court is established by virtue of THE (SPECIAL COURTS) DESIGNATION ORDER 2016.
The Special Courts Department of the CRS Judiciary is empowered by the above order to handle the following courts:
- Revenue Court: We handle matters from the State Internal Revenue Service on tax defaulters, etc, Waste Management Agency etc.
- Forestry Court: We handle forest related offences.
- Environmental and Sanitation Court: Health and Sanitation/Environmental related offences generally are prosecuted both in the State and Local Government levels. Such as Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Food Safety Department of the Ministry of Health etc.
- Ports and Allied Matters Court: All Ports related offences are handled by the special courts.
- Traffic Court: All Traffic related offences at all levels i.e Federal (Federal Road Safety Corp), Police traffic operations, VIO etc.
- Arbitration and Miscellaneous Matters Court: Offences and cases in relation to arbitration and other ancillary but related to the other courts listed above as miscellaneous are handled by the special court.
- Medical and Pharmaceutical Court: Medical related offences and pharmaceutical offences are also handled by the special courts.
- The Special Court operates as a Mobile Court and have jurisdiction throughout Cross River State.

- The Hon Chief Judge designates High Court Judges and Magistrates who handle Special Court matters in different Divisions and Magisterial Districts.

- Proceedings in respect of the special courts are wholly and entirely summary.

- The Special Court also maintains its own Registry at the Judiciary Headquarters, Calabar.
